How to apply


The universities of Russia provide state-subsidized education to some international applicants. Follow the steps below to become one of these applicants at MAU. Please, note that other expenses (accommodation, food, health insurance, visa, medical examination as well as personal expenditures) are paid separately.

You can study at the Russian universities free of charge if you fit into one of the categories below:

  1. Competitive selection – based on international treaties between your country and Russia and through the competitive selection along with Russian applicants;
  2. Quota students – based on the Government of the Russian Federation Resolution of October 8th, 2013, No. 891 “On the establishment of quotas for foreign citizens and persons without citizenship in the Russian Federation”;
  3. Compatriots – based on the Federal Law of May 24, 1999, No. 99-FZ “On the State Policy of the Russian Federation in respect of compatriots abroad”.

Can’t find your country? Please, contact us by e-mail to get more information.

If you fit into any category in Step 1 then:

  • for admission through competitive selection along with Russian citizens (within the international treaties): go to Step 3;
  • for admission within quota: apply to the Russian Embassy or Consulate in your country or the Rossotrudnichestvo office. You can also apply online via russia-edu.ru, russia.study or studyinrussia.ru. If your application is approved, then go to Step 7 and don’t forget to check the list of programs;
  • for admission as a compatriot: apply to the Russian Embassy or Consulate in your country and go to Step 3. Note that the recognition of belonging to the nation is a self-identity act. Compatriots abroad are citizens of the Russian Federation permanently residing outside its territory (USSR citizens and their descendants, as well as immigrants from the Russian state, the Russian republic, the RSFSR, the USSR and the Russian Federation and their descendants).

Check out the “Studies” section, where you can find courses with available tuition-free places. Then choose the program you are interested in and the level of education – Bachelor, Specialist, Master, Ph.D. or preparatory courses. Click on the faculty, department, or institution name to see more details.

If you want to study at the preparatory courses and learn Russian, then go back to Step 2 and select the “For admission within quota” section. You can also choose the “Self-finance studies” section, if you can pay for the studies.

Once you have chosen the program, send to international@mauniver.ru and priem@mauniver.ru the following documents:

  1. Primary application;
  2. The photocopy of your identity card or passport;
  3. Notarized translation into Russian of the identity card or passport;
  4. Document about previous education*;
  5. Notarized translation into Russian of the document about previous education.

*The list of documents can be extended. Note that the citizens of some particular countries must legalize their documents about previous education. You can find the additional information via our e-mails.

Competitive selection is carried out in several ways:

  • through MAU entrance exams;
  • ugh the Unified State Exam (USE);
  • through winning one of the Academic Competitions (Olympiads).

The majority of international students should have a study visa for a full-time study. MAU International Cooperation Office can help you to issue an invitation to get a study visa. For more details on how to get an invitation and visa, see “Arrival” section.

If you already have a working visa, then you can skip this step.

Review this page to prepare for the arrival.

After you arrive in Russia, come to MAU Admission Office to submit original documents from Step 5 and sign any applications:

  • Application for admission to study indicating the chosen program and form of training;
  • The document proving the identity of the applicant and their citizenship (original and notarized translation into Russian);
  • Document about previous education with indication of studied subjects and received marks (original and notarized translation into Russian);
  • Medical certificate with a note on results of HIV test and vaccination records. Please, note that the certificate and records can be issued at home. The main requirement is its legal status in Russia, that is, they must be translated and notarized;
  • 2 photos in size 3x4;

Note:

  • This list of documents is approximate, full list of documents is to be clarified at the MAU Admission office.
  • You may also prepare the necessary documents for housing in the dormitory beforehand. See “Accomodation” section.

Do not forget to visit MAU International Cooperation Office where you will get the details on the migration legislation and health insurance. They will also help you to get a registration at the local Police Department. Prepare the following documents:

  • your passport or identity card (original and notarize translation into Russian) and copies of pages with information;
  • migration card and its copy.

Then choose the program you are interested in and the level of education – Bachelor, Specialist, Master, Ph.D. or preparatory courses.   4. Document about previous education*;
  5. Notarized translation into Russian of the document about previous education.

Once your application is accepted, go to Step 5.

Competitive selection is carried out in several ways:

  • through MAU entrance exams;
  • through the Unified State Exam (USE);

If you have passed the competitive selection, you need to sign a contract and make an advance payment for studying at MAU. If you plan to study part-time, go to Step 10.
