Project «Nomad» international seminar

On the 30th November — the 2nd December an international seminar took place at the Barents Institute (Kirkenes, Norway). The seminar «The Kola Saami Reindeer Herding Community in the second decade of postsoviet developments: Problematizing the Town-Tundra Rift» was carried out within the project «Nomad».

The coordinator of the project is the University of Tromsø, and the ideological inspirator is Yulian Konstantinov, professor from Bulgaria, working at the University of Tromsø at the present time.

MSHU representatives actively participated in the seminar. The presentations were made by Olga Ivanischeva, Doctor of Philology, Dean of the Faculty of Philology, Journalism and Intercultural Communications, Alexey Nikolaev, PhD in Veterinary Sciences, Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Physical Culture and Life Security, Viktor Tsylev, PhD in Philosophy, Head of the Laboratory of Sociological Research.

During the seminar they discussed the problems of indigenous peoples of the Kola peninsula, issues of keeping the Saami identity, language and culture, dynamics of private-in-the-collective ownership in reindeer husbandry, different aspects of tourism development in Lovozero district and others.

The next seminar within the project will take place in Krasnoschelje (Murmansk region) in April 2011.
