On January 31, the head of Murmansk Arctic State University Andrei Sergeev met the Consulate General of Norway Mr. Erik Svedahl at MASU.

The meeting was devoted to the prospects for the development of cooperation between MASU and Norwegian partners within the framework of higher education. The head of MASU spoke about the history of university formation and development. He noticed that the university had previously focused just on training for the education sector, and now only about 20% of all programs implemented at the university are in the pedagogical field. In this case, special attention is paid to engineering and technical areas. Besides, a great deal of work is being done for opening a medical faculty. MASU management hopes that in 2020 Murmansk residents will have the opportunity to receive medical education without leaving their hometown.

«In 2017, MASU became one of the 33 flagship universities of Russia. MASU is the smallest in size and the only flagship university located in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. For the university and the region, it is an opportunity to update the resources of the entire work between universities, including human resources, equipment, laboratory facilities, etc. And now the question of how to establish this interaction is being discussed» said Andrei Sergeev.

Mr. Svedahl also inquired about key initiatives in which MASU cooperates with Norwegian partners. Special attention was paid to joint research of educational projects, as well as to bachelor and master programs that are substantively focused on Arctic issues.
«I am very pleased that cooperation between the university and Norway is developing, and that Norwegian language and culture are popular among students in Murmansk,» said Mr. Consulate General.

The meeting resulted in the mutual agreement to continue cooperation in the field of education and science, focusing on the priority projects of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation and the interests of the Barents Euro-Arctic Region as a whole.
