MASU students found out where the Russian northernmost university is located. The students came up with the idea of this research after they had found out that the University of Tromso (Norway) is the northernmost university in the world. MASU has a long-standing friendship with the University of Tromso. Norwegian city is located less than a degree to the north of Murmansk, so it was only logical to assume that the northernmost university of the Russian Federation should be somewhere at latitude 68-69.

Geographical coordinates of the educational institutions' legal addresses was the main criterion for selecting applicants. Therefore university branches and educational institutions that are not universities were not taken into account. As a result, only two Murmansk higher education institutions — MASU and MSTU — were chosen.

According to the geographic coordinates of MASU (Murmansk, Kapitana Egorova street, 15) — 68°5755 north latitude and 33°0439 east longitude — MASU is the northernmost university of Russia. MSTU (Murmansk, Sportivnaya street, 13) is located to the south of Murmansk Arctic State University at 68°5717 N and 33°0344 east.

Students of the Journalism Department of the Social and Humanitarian Institute of MASU drew the conclusion that it is not only the geographical coordinates that determine the northernmost status of the University of Murmansk. MASU develops Arctic-oriented educational programmes, like tho courses for Russia’s most northern physicians. Almost 150 such programmes have been created by now.

Scientists and university professors are actively studying human life in the Arctic. They study how the regional identity develops in the Kola High North, implement new technologies for the isolation and concentration of various target mineral and organic substances relevant for the industry of the Russian Arctic, conduct research on the extraction of biologically active substances from medicinal plants of the Far North. Also they monitor and make recommendations on the preservation of the Arctic natural ecosystems. The Arctic centre of creative industries reveals the creative potential of the young people living in the North. Finally, creating computer models of physical processes in the near-Earth environment the University staff largely contribute to the global science — we can never forget that the Arctic determines meteorological phenomena not only at the planet’s ground, but in the space around it as well.

«Today MASU is a classic university where students gain knowledge in various fields of science enjoying the optimal balance between natural sciences and humanitarian disciplines and where scientists conduct basic research, whereas the university promotes the formation and acquiring of moral and cultural values. We give our students not only knowledge. We teach them to think independently, to see opportunities in everyday problems and to always learn something new. The student initiative to determine the status of the country’s northernmost university is an illustration of our approach to an up-to-date education,» said Irina Shadrina, acting rector of MASU.
