The Human Capital Development Agency in the Russian Far East and the Arctic will support MASU regional development programmes.

The news was announced by the Agency representative Svetlana Dobvish who’s met with the regional Ministry of Education and MASU representatives to discuss how to nourish the Arctic economy with the qualified workers.

One of the key issues in the Russian Arctic and Murmansk region is the population outflow and the lack of qualified work force. Federal and regional authorities may help the university to improve the situation. The Agency experts suggest that MASU needs to increase the number of students in the most popular fields of study: tourism, creative industries, urban development, mining, medicine and healthcare.

These fields have been actively developed by MASU in recent years. The university takes part in the Tourism Cluster and has established the Northern Design Cluster, also it offers mining and energetics educational programmes. Moreover, MASU has become the first educational institution to train general medical practitioners in the Murmansk region. The Agency experts say that an increase in the number of state-funded scholarships for medicine students will help to curb the population outflow — school graduates will have an opportunity to get a higher education and stay in the region.

After the meeting, the experts assessed the MASU infrastructure. Special attention was given to the new creative spaces in the university buildings and their northern design. All four MASU campuses has been renovated recently. The renovation projects are created by the MASU students under the guidance of the assistant professor of the MASU Arts and Design Department Eleonora Agarkova. The students' work are inspired by the simplicity of northern nature. Each building has light installations for a better immersion into the Arctic aesthetics.
