Scientists from Murmansk Arctic State University went on a new expedition to Kildin Island. Together with their colleagues from St. Petersburg State University (SPbU) and Murmansk State Technical University (MSTU), the MASU researchers will continue studying the terrestrial ecosystem of the island and the dynamics of lake Mogilnoye.

Kildin Island has an unusual geology and extensive historical and cultural heritage. Moreover, the island is a home to unique species. Together it explains why Kildin is so attractive to various Natural Sciences and Liberal Arts experts.

Specialists from MASU «Monitoring and conservation of natural ecosystems of the Arctic» research laboratory plan to study the flora of the island and look for the traces of mercury in the lake. Their colleagues from SPbU and MSTU will conduct a hydrobiology research.
Moscow State University and the Far East branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences will contribute, though remotely, to the research too. For example, the geneticists from the Far East will help to determine the origin of the irises found on the island in 2018.

This year, the expedition was organized with the support of the autonomous non-profit organization «Arctic educational center» that aims to preserve the history of the Russian Arctic, identify and popularize the heritage of the Northern territories. Kildin Island Foundation participates in the expedition too. The expedition to the Arctic island will last until August 15.
