Experts, employers and researchers discussed the Arctic of the future

The Youth Career Festival «Arctic Practice» wrapped up at Murmansk Arctic State University. The participants of the Festival have been discussing the future of the region's highly demanded professions for two days.

Federal level experts, authorities, regional employers — all have gathered at the MASU. They discussed personnel needs from different perspectives — the region is interested in industries development, employers need trained people, and the university prepares trained personnel.

In his welcoming speech, Marat Shamyunov, Deputy Minister of the Russian Federation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic, noted the Arctic's geostrategic position in Russia and suggested the «Arctic Practice» Festival become an annual event.

«The 2020 Arctic personnel needs analysis showed that more than 182,000 new jobs will be created by 2035, about 40% of which (or 65,500 jobs) are the jobs for university graduates. Such directions as mining, manufacturing and construction works are the priority. Murmansk region requires special attention and fine-tuning so that the training system meets the economy's needs,» said Marat Shamyunov.

According to Andrei Purtov, curator of Marketing and Brand Management program at the British Higher School of Art and Design, when training personnel, it is vital to understand not the present demand from employers, but the demand for specialists in 4−5 years, given the duration of educational programs for preparing university graduates.

It is crucial to understand what kind of specialists are now and will be in demand later, what their expertise should be and whether the region has all the opportunities to train them.

«We are working with leading enterprises of Murmansk region and with the regional government to track the shortage in personnel, its amount and which competencies they are lacking. We are trying to be proactive so that we, first of all, cover the regional enterprises' demand in personnel and, second of all, provide our graduates with a starting point in their careers,» said Irina Shadrina, MASU Rector. «Our students get to know the industries during their first practical training, and stakeholders are ready to give them jobs when they graduate.»

The work of the regional personnel training system should be in harmony with the requirements of both enterprises that represent the real economy of Murmansk region and younger generations.

«We should jointly manage the demand, build a good image of the professions that we need, offer them opportunities to obtain all the necessary competencies here, in our region,» said Yuri Fomin, vice-governor, during his welcoming speech. «If we take into account the pace at which technological processes change, the forming competencies should have a safety margin and be ahead of their time.»

On the second day of the Festival, Yuri Fomin spoke about the future of personnel in the Arctic during an online marathon for applicants. Starting his speech, he highlighted the importance of such skills as critical thinking and the ability to question any statement concerning the future and its prediction. Yuri Fomin also noted that new specialists should have the ability to learn quickly and adjust to a new reality with personal goals in mind.
