Research Center for Medical and Biological Problems of Human Adaptation in the Arctic in Apatity, which is a branch of the Federal Research Center — Kola Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences became a venue for the International Interdisciplinary Workshop dedicated to the well-being of the Sami people, the value of reproductive health and environmental quality.

The event aimed to draw the attention of the indigenous communities and researchers to the health-related issues and their vital part — the reproductive health of the indigenous peoples. Well-being, environmental quality, and ecosystem change were part of the discussion as well.

Polina Osechinskaya, Master's programme graduate of 2021, an early career researcher, presented MASU at the Workshop. Polina talked about industrial pollution assessment via biological indicators. The study provides the abnormal development analysis of the pine seed's pollen. The high rate of anomalies proves the toxicity and mutagenicity of the environment due to the emissions from apatite-nepheline ore extraction. The result of the study allows its author to form a hypothesis on the conformity of human and plants reproductive disorders. The study was met with great interest among workshop participants and researchers. Polina's speaking notes are to be published in a special edition of 'International Journal of Circumpolar Health', a peer-reviewed international open-access journal.

Polina is a Master's student, who graduated in 2021 with a thesis analyzing environmental palinoindication of the city of Apatity. The study was conducted under Natalia Vasilevskaya, Advanced Doctor of Biological science, Professor of MASU Natural Sciences Department.
