MASU students tested the waters of Kola Nuclear Power Plant

MASU students visited Kola Nuclear Power Plant and explored its hydraulic structures as part of 'Russia's Unique Water Bodies', which is a federally funded project.

Soon-to-be ecologists observed the nuclear reactor and the plant's control panel, examined the static and mobile laboratories, and wastewater discharge area within Molochnaya Gulf of the Imandra Lake. Students also got to see local aquacultures and the endangered Siberian sturgeon, which is farmed there in the Plant's heated waters. Environmental safety at the Kola Nuclear Power Plant has always been one of the top priorities.

«Students get an insight into the work of the region's biggest nuclear power facilities, its production cycle, ecological monitoring, and radiation control,» said Maria Svetlova, Associate professor of MASU Natural Sciences Department. «Such trips are effective for provoking the curiosity among students. We pay such visits with delight. This way, our students get to see the work of the enterprises or worksites. It is also a great opportunity to plan a student's internship and help them with further employment.»

Kola Nuclear Power Plant is the first nuclear power plant built beyond the Arctic Circle. It is also the backbone enterprise and key employer of Polyarnye Zori. The first out of four nuclear reactors went online back in 1973.
