Adaptation of MAU International Students in the Region and Country

Murmansk Arctic University has organised an event for international students aimed at their adaptation to the regional differences, preventing involvement in illegal acts and engaging them in socially useful activities.

Rector Assistant Vyacheslav Mironov reminded students coming to study in Russia that the authorities have an increased interest in them and, consequently, in control over their stay in the country.

«I urge you to be attentive and responsible about what you do, say and write on the Internet. Even statement about your attitude to religions or nationalities or belonging to a social stratum, as well as any global processes related to war crimes and terrorist acts, can be interpreted by the law enforcement bodies as extremism, or even terrorism, or its justification,» Vyacheslav Mironov reminded the students.

He also added that terrorism is an extreme form of extremism and a socially dangerous phenomenon. Activities of this nature in our country are criminalised from the age of 14, and the punishment can lead up to life imprisonment. Vyacheslav Mironov stressed that compliance with internal regulations of the university, rules of living in dormitories, as well as the importance of timely tuition fees payment to prevent possible expulsion from the university, are essential factors that affect students' stay in the country.

A representative of the Department for Migration Affairs in the Murmansk region told international students about the features and innovations of the migration legislation of the Russian Federation: the register of controlled persons, shortening of stay period, regime of expulsion, mandatory biometrics, acquisition of SIM cards, and medical examinations. All these measures are aimed at tightening control over migration and increasing security. The representative of the Department urged to pay close attention to the rules of stay in Russia, which are regulated by law.

As part of the event, MAU Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs Viktoria Yatsenko awarded students from India with special commendations for participating in organisation of the event dedicated to March 8. Representatives of the Medicine and Life Sciences Institute and he Additional Education for Children and Adults Institute also took part in the meeting. Language support was provided by specialists from the International Cooperation Office.

«Such events are an important part of the socio-cultural adaptation activities of international students in MAU and, in general, work to form a comfortable and safe environment at the university. These initiatives help students from other countries to adapt quickly to our regional peculiarities, understand local traditions, norms of behaviour and legislation, which minimises risks of their involvement in illegal activities. We are confident that such meetings not only enhance students' legal literacy, but also contribute to their personal growth and development of a positive image of the university and the region as a whole,» noted Yulia Shestova, Head of the International Cooperation Office. «Our office will continue to develop in this field by expanding collaboration with law enforcement agencies, public organisations, and students themselves to maximise the effectiveness of such programmes. International students can always contact us for help at our office, or join the international student association МОСт
