Dialogue Without Borders: Students Meet ‘Bike for Peace' Riders

Murmansk Arctic University recently hosted a meeting between students and representatives of the Norwegian organisation «Bike for Peace», led by the movement's founder, Tore Nærland. The group arrived in Murmansk as part of their international mission to promote peace and cross-cultural dialogue, demonstrating that sport and human connection can transcend any borders, regardless of nationality or political differences.

The event unfolded as an open conversation in English and Norwegian. Students from the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences learned about the movement's history, its guiding philosophy, and the most memorable routes it has taken across dozens of countries over the years. Tore Nærland shared stories of encounters with people from around the world, reflecting on how a simple bicycle can become a symbol of sustainable development and mutual understanding.

What really caught the audience's attention was hearing how the cyclists navigate climatic and cultural challenges during their journeys. Students asked questions about expedition preparation, the most unexpected moments on the road, and what, in the guests' view, matters most today for strengthening friendship among people from different nations.

«The visit of the Norwegian cycling movement to Murmansk Arctic University was a brilliant example of people's diplomacy,» commented Yulia Shestova, Head of the International Cooperation Office. «It's a reminder that education and youth collaboration remain a space for open, honest dialogue. For our students, meetings like this mean a chance to broaden their horizons, put their language skills to use, and connect with people who live by the ideals of peace, sustainability, and mutual respect—not just as words, but as a way of life.»
